An escape to Mont Thabor from Megève
From your stay at Chalet Ararat in Megève, Mont Thabor, at an altitude of 3,178 metres, is one of the most accessible Alpine destinations for a first experience of the high mountains.
This exceptional ascent will enable you to discover a unique centuries-old heritage, nestling in the heart of the Franco-Italian Alps.
Un sommet chargé d’histoire et de spiritualité
Perched at an altitude of 3,171 metersthe Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs chapel on Mont Thabor holds the prestigious title of being the highest chapel in France. Built in the 15th century, this chapel belonged to the Escartons territory, which lasted until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
The origin of the name "Thabor" remains mysterious and is the subject of two hypotheses:
- one biblical, brought back to Mount Tabor in Israel by pilgrims returning from the Crusades,
- the other etymological, linked to a local surname "Tabord" from Modane.
This unanswered question reinforces the mystical nature of this summit, which has attracted pilgrims and hikers for centuries.
An ascent accessible from Megève
From your base at Chalet Ararat, Mount Thabor is particularly accessible despite its 3,178 meters of altitude. The classic route from the Clarée Valley or the Vallée Étroite offers a demanding ascent of 5 to 7 hours round trip depending on the starting point, accessible to experienced hikers.
This hike will take you past alpine lakes, mineral peaks and numerous refuges for total mountain immersion. The trail winds through the mountain pastures, from chalet to chalet, amidst Tarines chewing on soft grass and wild flowers, before taking on a more lunar atmosphere towards the summit.
An exceptional panorama of the Alps
At the summit, you will discover breathtaking views of the surrounding massifs, notably the Écrins and Mont Blanc, with an absolutely magnificent 360° panorama. From this unique vantage point, you can admire the mountains from the terraces of Chalet Ararat.
In fine weather, you can see Grandes Jorasses, Grande Casse and Mont Pourri, the most iconic peaks in the Alps.
An endangered heritage, a testament to the challenges of climate change
The chapel of Mont Thabor is now threatened by global warming. The melting of the permafrost on which the building rests is threatening its stability, a striking illustration of the concrete consequences of climate change for our heritage.
This reality gives your climb a special dimension: that of bearing witness to an exceptional heritage, the preservation of which represents a major challenge for future generations. Safety work has recently been undertaken in preparation for a complete restoration of this architectural treasure.
